If you haven’t checked out Twitter yet, now would be a good time to do it. Twitter is micro-blogging combined with a social network of sorts. The micro aspect is that your posts are limited to 140 characters. The social aspect is your community of friends and followers.
Neat idea - very simple, but it works. I use it for quick “what I am doing right now” type stuff and I can keep up with other people I’m interested in or know.
